(Translation by Morgan Daimler)

That the Gods are still identified as such in early literary works and are not simply Otherworldly figures is significant; it is likely the result of Ireland, unlike Britain, remaining free of Roman annexation, its attendant early Christianization, and the subsequent societal collapse and waves of invasion that resulted after Roman withdrawal from the British Isles 400 years later. The Irish therefore held on to their Pagan beliefs and social structures longer than the Celts of Britain and the continent, and began to write them down sooner. The happy consequence of this is that of all the Celtic cultures, the Irish possess the largest corpus of myth and lore; and while all of the Celts possessed distinct, yet related cultures, it is possible to look for parallels both in story and with divinities to help fill in some (very strongly-qualified) blanks in the Brythonic traditions, especially when there are also similarities in Gallic cultures.
